Years ago, Home security was left for the professionals to handle. Today, homeowners can set up their own video surveillance systems without the need to hire a security company. For only a few hundred dollars, some very reliable and functional security cameras can be installed.

When considering video surveillance systems, there are some basic components involved. The most common types of security cameras are either bullet or dome shaped. The bullet types are typically installed outdoor, and they feature weatherproof housing. The dome types are installed on top of indoor ceilings. There are mounting brackets which make installation very easy.

A DVR (Digital Video Recorder) is one of the most important parts of a home security video system. A DVR usually features multiple outputs such as A/V, USB, and sometimes Ethernet. This makes the system compatible with any TV and computer (PC or Mac.) When connecting to a computer, software needs to be installed to get the full features and benefits. It’s important to consider the memory capacity (in GBs) of a DVR to make sure you get enough space to record all of the necessary video footage.

A common term in video surveillance systems is channels. The number of channels refers to the amount of cameras that the system can support. For example, you can connect up to 4 security cameras to a single DVR, but it will also work with just one camera.

Nightvision is a very important feature in home security cameras. These cameras use infrared technology to capture images in the darkness. You may notice tiny round holes surrounding the camera lens, these are known as LED sensors used for nightvision. In most cameras, the night vision range is less than 30 feet, but the most advanced types offer a better range.

Most video surveillance cameras are wired and use long power and data cables usually measuring about 60 feet. However, there are some wireless systems which use routers to communicate. The routers can then be connected to computers for reviewing the videos. [phpbay]security system, 20, 48629, “color”[/phpbay]
